Walter Woods

	Walter Woods, 77, DuQuoin, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 at 6:57 a.m. at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, IN.
	Mr. Woods was a retired coal miner and a member of Smith 	Memorial AME Zion Church.  He was the original president of the DuQuoin Chapter of the NAACP and belonged to the DuQuoin VFW, Mens Friendship Club and United Mine Workers Association.  He served in the Navy during WW II.
	He was born September 13, 1922 at St. John, the son of William and Lovie (McChristian) Woods.  He married Erma Harris on December 2, 1961 at DuQuoin and she survives.
	In addition to his wife Erma of DuQuoin, he is survived by a son, William Andrew Woods of East Chicago, IN; five daughters and a son-in-law, Janice Daughty of St. Louis, MO, Angela Carter of St. Louis, MO, Diane and Charles Stone of Gary, IN, Tracy Woods of East Chicago, IN and Nina Gean Woods of East  Chicago, IN and a brother, Elbert Woods of DuQuoin; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, seven nieces; five nephews, one great-niece and four great-nephews.
	He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one brother and one sister.
	Funeral services were Thursday, May 4 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Dr. Freddie Banks officiating.  Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery at DuQuoin.
	Friends were able to call Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. and from 7:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday.
